Dr. Ron Hughes currently serves as a Percussion Artist-in-Residence at Dreyfoos School of the Arts and Bak Middle School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, Florida and at St. Mark’s Episcopal School in Fort Lauderdale.

Ron’s percussion ensembles have been invited to perform at the National Percussion Festival, the Florida Day of Percussion, the Florida Music Educators Conference, and the University of South Florida Marimba Festival.

His private students have successfully auditioned into the Florida All-State ensembles—at least two, and as many as six, have been chosen each year since 1998. They’ve also won numerous concerto and solo competitions, including the Florida Day of Percussion, National Public Radio’s “From the Top” Young Artists Scholarship Award, the United States International Music Competition (Finalist), and a National YoungArts Foundation Merit winner.
After graduating from high school, his former private students have gone on to place first and second two years in a row at the Percussive Arts Society International College Marimba Individuals Competition, won the Great Plains International Marimba Competition, and have secured orchestral and collegiate teaching positions.

Ron received his doctorate degree in Music Education from Boston University, his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois, and performed with the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps.
