Paul Ormandy has led a thirty-five year journey of
performance throughout North America, Europe, Japan, and the Caribbean. His
percussive experience spans a broad variety of settings: symphony and opera
orchestras; jazz, R & B, and Country music; Afro-Cuban and Salsa; Flamenco;
and Indonesian gamelan––to name a few.
In theatre Paul has performed in numerous Broadway-style
shows including the Canadian Premieres of The Lion King, The Producers,
and the World Premiere run of Lord of the Rings in
Toronto. He is currently working on Sousatzka––Garth Drabinsky’s next
blockbuster musical.
His previous international experience includes membership
in Phase II Pan Groove Steel Orchestra (Trinidad), Mika Yoshida’s Marimbop
(Japan), and soloist performances in world drumming festivals including Musaïc
at Expo 1998 (Lisbon) and Heartbeat at Expo 2000 (Hanover).
Mr. Ormandy appears on and off-screen in numerous
television and radio programs, can be heard on over one hundred and fifty commercial
audio recordings, and has presented premieres of his own multi-media
compositions.
Paul is the Visiting Artist in Percussion at the Etobicoke
School of the Arts, Drums and Percussion Lesson Instructor for Long and McQuade
Musical Instruments, and has served on faculty at York University, University
of Toronto, and The Royal Conservatory of Music. He is currently pursuing a PhD
in Ethnomusicology as a Caribbean music specialist focused on the Cayman
Islands.
