To most individuals music tends to serve as more than a hobby than a profession. But for Nathan Medina, the world of indoor and marching percussion is synonymous to the very nature of his being. As a storied veteran of the Southern California percussion scene, Nathan began his journey at the age of 12 at Ruth Musser Middle School in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. In 2003 the ensemble earned the SCPA Bronze Medal in the Percussion Scholastic Junior division. Success would continue to follow, as Nathan’s first year as a snare drummer at Rancho Cucamonga High School – under the instruction of Ken McGrath, Caleb Rothe and Eric Shriver – earned the ensemble the 2004 WGI Percussion Scholastic Open Gold Medal.

He turned his attention to the drum corps world at the age of 15, marching with Impulse Drum and Bugle Corps in 2005 and 2006 – under the instruction of Ike Jackson, Ken McGrath and Caleb Rothe – where the corps earned the 2006 Division III Championship and the High Percussion Caption Award.

Upon graduating high school, Nathan joined the prestigious ranks of the Santa Clara Vanguard as a snare drummer in 2007 and 2008 under the instruction of Mike Jackson, Micah Hardwick, Murray Gusseck and Brian Mason – earning the 2008 Outstanding Visual Award. He further expanded his reach into the drum corps scene by spending an astounding three years with the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps, earning the 2010 DCI Bronze Medal and the 2010 Outstanding Visual Award under the instruction of Tom Rarick, Mike Jackson, Eric Shriver and Tim Jackson.

The year 2010 would continue to mark Nathan’s streak of success, both as a performer and instructor, as Nathan’s three-year participation as section leader with the Independent World Ensemble Pulse Percussion (Rosemead, CA) ended with the ensemble earning its first WGI World Championship in the Percussion Independent World category.  On the teaching side of things, Nathan has served as the snare instructor for Ayala High School (Chino Hills, CA) since 2008, whom would also go on to earn their very first WGI World Championship in the Percussion Scholastic World category in 2010.

Presently, Nate remains active as a designer, instructor and writer for the 2011 SCPA Percussion Scholastic A Bronze Medalist, Arroyo High School (El Monte, CA), Ayala High School, as well as Damien High School (La Verne, CA) and Ontario High School (Ontario, CA). As well as this will be the first year he will be a snare technician for the Academy Drum and Bugle Corps for the 2012 season. He has also worked at: Alvarado Intermediate, Magnolia High School, Rancho Cucamonga High School and Tesoro High School; all in the southern california area.

When Nathan isn’t occupied with his multiple designing/teaching responsibilities, he tends to various freelance performing gigs, having been featured on high profile programs such as "The American Music Awards" and "America’s Best Dance Crew" in 2010 with several other members of Pulse Percussion, as well as other performing opportunities.

He currently attends Cal Poly Pomona, studying for his major in Business Management, and resides in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
