Matt Mayhall (born April 30, 1978) is a Los Angeles based drummer, composer, session musician, and educator. He is currently touring with The Both, a collaborative effort between acclaimed indie ingersongwriters Aimee Mann and Ted Leo. They have toured extensively across the U.S. and Canada, and performed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, CONAN, and Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Since graduating from California Institute of the Arts with an MFA in Jazz Studies in 2008, Matt has been a soughtafter sideman in an eclectic mix of musical settings. He has worked with jazz guitarist Anthony Wilson, avantgarde multiinstrumentalist Vinny Golia, visual/performance artist Mike Kelley, indiefolk singer Patrick Park, Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles, comedian Tim Heidecker, and actress/singer Emmy Rossum, to name only a few.
Matt also tours and records as a bandleader. His compositions combine instrumental postrock with improvisation. Members of his ensemble include Adam Benjamin (Kneebody), Jeff Parker (Tortoise), and Tim Lefebvre (Tedeschi Trucks Band).
Matt earned both Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in percussion from the University of Nevada, Reno. During his college years, he also attended workshops at the School For Improvisational Music in New York City, where he studied drums with Ben Perowsky, Gene Jackson, Jim Black, and Matt Wilson. At Cal Arts he studied closely with drummer Joe LaBarbera, trumpeter/composer Wadada Leo Smith, and bassist Charlie Haden. It was through his relationship with Haden that he began working with Charlie's son, Josh Haden. In 2008, Matt joined Josh's band, Spain. From 2008-2013, Spain recorded three albums and toured all over Europe a handful of times.
Matt is currently teaching at Musician's Institute in Hollywood. He is endorsed by Paiste Cymbals, C&C Custom Drums, and Innovative Percussion Drumsticks and Mallets.
