Belgian Marimba Artist
Internationally highly acclaimed as a virtuoso and devoted pedagogue, Ludwig Albert belongs throughout the world as Belgian leading marimbist with the absolute topflight of marimbists nowadays. Well-known as one of the rare lyrical performers, he’s praised worldwide for his unique sound and his pedagogical contribution in future marimba play with his pioneering movement method, reaching for an ultimate sound and musical performance.
After obtaining a First Prize for Percussion, the Superior Diploma percussion and a Master degree specialisation marimba, he was profoundly shaping his musical talent as first Belgian marimbist with the Japanese marimba virtuoso Keiko Abe at the Toho Gakuan Music School in Tokyo-Japan, and performed with her starting 1996 several concert productions and –tours.
Starting 1995, he searched for new sound-combinations and founded the duo ‘Patrasche’ with the combination of marimba and voice. As true pioneers of this unique combination, they developed a style of their own and could inspire nowadays several artists and composers to create new music for this strength. They evoke a fascinating world performing mainly Albert’s own compositions, arrangements, creations and improvisations, all based on traditional folksongs. Their first album “Japanese Impressions” received abroad outstanding critics and was awarded as ‘best classic album’. They are regular invited guests of dedicated radio-broadcastings & festivals abroad. In 2002 they produced their second album “Impressions of the low-countries” and will release their newest album “Ardor” in 2011.
In 1996, he founded the organisation “marimba-Projects” to develop the marimba by organizing marimba-events & pedagogical projects. He founded in 2001 the “Universal Marimba Competition & Festival of Belgium” and is related as artistic director to this prestigious competition celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2011, under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Paola. He also founded as artistic director the ‘Keiko Abe Int. Marimba Academy’ and the yearly ‘’Ludwig Albert Int. Marimba Summer Academy’. He founded at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, known as Europe’s largest Art faculty, a marimba department offering Europe’s first official marimba master degree. Showered with several tittles, he recorded 8 label-albums: Japanese Impressions, marimba paraphrases, marimba dances, impressions of the Low Countries, marimba Christmas fantasy, marimba waves, marimba selections and Global marimba with mainly own works, arrangements, improvisations and first-recordings of masterworks and dedicated compositions. At present he signed up with an American label and will release from 2011 several new solo albums with new creations and dedicated compositions and a new album with his Flanders marimba ensemble known as Europe’s first marimba ensemble.
He appeared over a decade as Yamaha artist, signed up from 2010 as endorsing artist of Adams Company and assisted in the creation of his own new marimba concert model. He’s the first European marimbist using special designed decors and light-effects during his audio-visual productions to attract a larger audience. He astonished the audience by playing in première the marimba with 8 mallets. Over last ten years he performed several Int. tours as a soloist and with the cooperation of significant guest artists, ensembles & orchestras. Due to his continual successful presentations, he’s receiving repeatedly invitations Worldwide as a regular guest to perform concerts and master classes at most significant festivals and universities in Belgium, Spain, France, Argentine, Mexico, Russia, Japan, Austria, Croatia, Hungary, USA, China, Taiwan, Australia, Netherlands, Uruguay, Korea, Hong-Kong, Germany, Italy, Poland, Lithuania etc… He knew to establish a status for his tremendous successful pioneering presentations in some countries such as Mexico, Russia, Uruguay... He‘s related as titular professor marimba at the Belgian Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp and the Lemmens institute in Leuven. He’s guest professor at the “Universidad Nac. del Artes” in Chiapas, doctorandus at the University Antwerp and serves as president and founder of the Percussive Arts Society- chapter Belgium. He appeared as a jury member at international competitions in Russia, Belgium, Spain, Mexico, France, Italy, Croatia, Lithuania…
For his celebrations of 10 & 15 years career, he released a double album, appeared in a Belgian mass production with more than 12.000 spectators, performed a sold out Belgian concert tour and got an item on the Russian National news broadcast for his successful Russian concert tours.
His total repertory of own and dedicated compositions and arrangements is published by Beurskens music editions (NL) and his signature Ludwig Albert mallet-line is produced by the American company Innovative percussion. Well-known as one of the rare outstanding lyrical performers and praised for his unique warm sound , he’s honoured with several awards such as the percussion award of honour 2001, and is highly praised by Int. press-reviews with critics often described on major broadcasts and printings, such as:
