Jimi Brown currently serves as the Assistant Professor of Music – Percussion at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, MS. His most previous employment was in the Gulfport School District in Gulfport, MS where he served as Director of Percussion and Concert Band Director. He taught over 75 percussion students 6th through 12th grade. He received his Bachelor of Music Education from The University of Southern Mississippi in 2008 and Master of Music Education from WCU in 2020. While attending Southern Miss, he was a member of the Pride of Mississippi Marching Band where he served 2 consecutive years as drum captain and studied with Dr. John Wooton (along with graduate assistants Dr. Jeff Grant, Dr. Brian Cheesman and Kevin Welborn and adjunct instructor, Harrell Bosarge). He was also a member of the Southern Miss percussion studio, Southern Miss Steel Pan Orchestra (SoMiSPo), the Down Isle Steel Band (combo), and the Southern Miss Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Thomas V. Fraschillo.
While a student at Southern Miss, Mr. Brown also served on the percussion staff for several Mississippi schools including: Vicksburg HS, Brandon HS, Columbia HS, Purvis HS, Forrest County Agricultural HS, Poplarville HS, Pascagoula HS, Stone HS, Vancleave HS, Pass Christian HS, Hinds Community College, and Tuscaloosa County HS (in Tuscaloosa, AL.). He has also worked alongside percussion greats Bret Kuhn, Tom Aungst, Jeff Prosperie, Hawley Gary, Lalo Davilla and Marty Hurley.
While pursuing a music education degree, he helped lead the Columbia High School Marching Band to 3 State Championships. After earning his degree, Jimi led the Stone High School Drumline to a 3rd place finish at State Championships. Since joining the Gulfport School District, his indoor drumlines have earned 2nd Place in the Scholastic Regional A Marching class at LMCGPC Circuit Championships in 2012; in 2016, advanced to Finals at the WGI Hattiesburg Regional in Scholastic A Marching; 1st Place in Scholastic Concert A class at the 2017 LMCGPC Circuit Championships - (earning a promotion to Scholastic Concert Open for the 2018 season in their home circuit); in 2018, Gulfport was the 1st Place WGI South Power Regional Champion in the Scholastic Concert A class, 1st Place in Scholastic Concert Open Class at LMCGPC Circuit Championships as well as earning 8th Place in their first ever trip to WGI World Championships in Dayton, OH in Scholastic Concert A class; and in 2019, received 3rd place in Scholastic
Percussion Novice at LMCGPC Circuit Championships.
In addition, Mr. Brown collaborates, composes and arranges percussion scores with area bands. He is also a band director and has consistently earned All Superior Ratings on stage and sightreading. As a middle school band director, Jimi Brown also received the 2017 Middle School Band Director of the Year award in the Gulf Coast Band Directors Association where he served as Percussion Coordinator and 1st Vice President. In April of 2020, Mr. Brown was elected into the American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA).
