J. Gabriel Galvis P. was born in 1979 in Bucaramanga, Santander / Colombia.
He began his musical studies at the age of 15
in the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Colombia and in 2000 entered the
Conservatory of Music at Universidad Nacional de Colombia, where he studied
with Mario Sarmiento and Federico Demmer. He graduated as Percussionist with a
minor in Composition in 2008. At present he is pursuing Masters studies in
Performance (Percussion) at the Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá.
He has performed in the most important venues
in Bogotá and Barranquilla in Colombia with various ensembles like Universidad
Nacional Percussion Ensemble, Crio-Jazz quintet, Dos Aguas, Biarritz Ballet
Company, Tambuco Percussion Ensemble and Sinergia Ensemble in Sao Paulo,
Brasil. He has been guest musician with
the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra on many occasions and extra musician with the
National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia for 10 years.
He has participated in workshops and master
classes among others with the percussionists Jean Geoffroy, Colin Currie, Ney
Rosauro, John Lane, Juan David Forero, Diana Melo, Alex Acuña; with
vibraphone players and jazz musicians David Friedman, Gary Burton, Nika Mimura,
Alfredo Naranjo, Giacomo Riggi, Antonio Arnedo, Hector Martignon, Ricardo Narvaez
and Samuel Torres.
He has also participated as musician in theater
performances like: The
Seagull – Anton Chèjov - Directed by
Carlos Sepúlveda, Mientras Mientas – Claudia Giraldo – Directed by Leonardo
Petro, Büchner: La Herida – Directed by
Carlos Sepúlveda, Guest Work XIV Festival Iberoamericano de Bogotá 2014.
At present he is percussion teacher at Universidad
Nacional de Colombia, Universidad Javeriana, and Universidad Pedagógica Nacional.
