Markeya C. Sherard, professionally known as “Big Tez”, was born on January 18, 1982, in upstate South Carolina to the late Bernard and Frances Sherard. Influenced by his parents’ strong musical backgrounds, he developed into a versatile artist—percussionist, bassist, vocalist, and music manager. Their guidance helped shape his artistic foundation and set the stage for the career that continues to unfold today.
After taking the stage at the age of five, Big Tez began his musical journey in the Southern gospel tradition, performing in his local church. He later became the drummer for Still Cruzin, a well known upstate South Carolina band recognized for its R&B, soul, and beach music sound. During his eight years with the group, he toured the East Coast as both a percussionist and vocalist.
His career advanced significantly when he became the First Call Drummer for platinum selling recording artist Edwin McCain, a fellow Greenville native. Joining the Edwin McCain Band marked a pivotal point in his musical path, launching him into extensive national and international touring as a featured percussionist. His contributions can be heard on McCain’s 2013 release Live Versions, which highlights several of the artist’s hit records.
Now approaching two decades with the Edwin McCain Band, Big Tez has also collaborated with, coached, and developed numerous regional and national artists. His performance and recording history spans an extensive roster of bands and musicians, including Flat Front Tire, Gypsy Soul, Groove Planet, Chocolate Thunder, Rickey Godfrey, Wanda Johnson, Jamie Wright, Paula Harris, Loretta Holloway, Carolina Coast Band, Dr. Mac Arnold & Plate Full of Blues, Max Hightower, and many others.
In addition to performing, Big Tez has expanded his influence into artist development, mentorship, and band management across the upstate region. He is also the owner and operator of Big Tez House of Drums, a premier percussion shop in Greenville, South Carolina, where he provides education and support to musicians at every level.
His career achievements have been recognized at the highest levels. Announced in 2025 and officially commenced in 2026, Big Tez was inducted into the South Carolina Music Hall of Fame of Entertainment and Music, an honor that reflects his dedication, longevity, and impact on the music community. He also serves as a board member for the Greenville Music Preservation (GMP) initiative, supporting efforts to preserve and celebrate the region’s musical heritage.
With no plans to slow down, Big Tez continues to contribute his talent to local, national, and international music scenes. Reflecting on his journey, he notes: “This musical adventure has been a long journey. Every experience has sharpened my skills and prepared me for what’s to come.”
