Tim Heath is the director of athletic bands and assistant professor of instrumental music education at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Previously, he was a graduate teaching assistant with The University of Alabama Bands and Music Education Department, where he is a candidate for the educational doctorate in music education. At the University of Alabama he conducted the pep bands, the concert band, and taught and arranged for the Million Dollar Band percussion section. Tim’s other marching band experiences include serving as the front ensemble coordinator for the Music City Drum & Bugle Corps and staff positions with Methodist University’s “Pride of the Carolina’s” in Fayetteville, NC and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s “Spirit of the Carolina’s” in Pembroke, NC.
Tim’s previous appointments have included instructor of music at the University of Mount Olive in Mount Olive, NC where he taught pep band, percussion, and music education courses. He has also taught middle school and high school. Tim has adjudicated for the marching band activity in North Carolina, Virginia, and Alabama. As a drum set player, Tim has performed with First Colony Records artist Charlie Albertson and Sunday School Hype artist Zaccheaus Tree. As a percussionist, he has performed with the Tuscaloosa Symphony, where he played drum set with Grammy Award Winner Judy Collins. His past performance opportunities have included the Wilson Symphony Orchestra, the Alabama Winds, the Greensboro Philharmonia, the Pitt Symphony Orchestra, and percussionist for Triad Brass.
Tim has presented sessions and research at state and national music conferences and is published in Percussive Notes and The Instrumentalist. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Master’s degree from The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Tim is an active member of the Percussive Arts Society, the National Association for Music Education, College Band Directors National Association, College Music Society, Kappa Delta Epsilon, a member of the PAS Scholarly Research Committee, and is an Honorary Member of Kappa Kappa Psi. He is an endorser for Innovative Percussion, Mapex/Majestic, Sabian Cymbals, Humes and Berg Cases, and Evans Drum Heads.
