In 2009 at 29, Jauvon Gilliam was appointed principal timpanist of the National Symphony Orchestra by unanimous vote of the orchestra committee and Maestro Christoph Eschenbach.

Prior to moving to DC, he was principal timpanist of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for seven seasons.  He has appeared as guest principal timpanist with the Budapest Festival Orchestra and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and has also performed with The Cleveland Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony and Indianapolis Chamber Orchestras.  He was also timpanist of the Bear Valley Music Festival for three seasons.  Most recently, he has the privilege of being the principal timpanist of the All-Star Orchestra, a made-for-TV group comprised of principal players from all around the United States.

Jauvon attended the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he was a student of Paul Yancich.  He received a full scholarship in piano performance for his undergraduate studies at Butler University.  He later changed to full-time percussion, studying with Jon Crabiel, and graduated with a degree in Arts Administration.  His other teachers/mentors include Tim Adams, David Herbert and Craig Hetrick.

Jauvon is currently the Director of Percussion Studies/Artist-in-Residence at the University of Maryland and previously held the same position at the University of Manitoba.  His former students are currently performing in orchestras and teaching in high schools and universities across the United States and Canada.  Jauvon is a proud artist/clinician for Remo Drumheads, Yamaha Musical Instruments, Sabian Cymbals and Innovative Percussion
