Dr. Darren Duerden is an Associate Professor of Percussion at Brigham Young University - Hawaii where he directs the steel band Shaka Steel, the BYU-Hawaii Salsa Orchestra, and oversees a Polynesian Drum Ensemble. Darren is currently the president of the Hawaii Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society and is also a frequent performer with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and the Maui Pops Orchestra. He has served on faculty at Mississippi Valley State University, Holmes Community College in Mississippi, and Kearns High School in Utah. Other professional affiliations include: The Mississippi Symphony, The Tallahassee Symphony, The Utah Chamber Artists, Ballet West, and Sundance Summer Theatre. He holds a Doctorate and Master’s degree from Florida State University and a Bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University. Articles on marimba pedagogy and Tahitian drumming have been authored by Darren in Percussive Notes (The Journal of the Percussive Arts Society) and he has steel band music published by Panyard, Inc. and Tropical Hammer.
